SUPPORT GROUP FORMED FOR WOMEN IN EXHIBITION

Nick Dager

A new organization was formed in recent weeks designed by women in exhibition for women in exhibition. Heather Blair, the founder of the new trade group Women in Exhibition, says the idea had its beginnings one day at a conference when, for the latest in more times than she can remember, she was the lone woman taking part in a panel discussion with a group of all white men. She says she knows many talented and intelligent women who have as much to offer the industry as men do and she set her mind to changing things. I recently spoke with Blair about her plans and goals for the new organization. Here is our conversation. http://bit.ly/36mSSVO

DEFINING EVENT CINEMA

Nick Dager

Grainne Peat
Managing Director
Event Cinema Association

Event Cinema Association executive director Grainne Peat celebrated her first year in that role when the association convened in Amsterdam earlier this month for its annual convention. It has been a busy year for the association and for Peat who has implemented many changes. I recently spoke with her to talk about all that has happened in the past eleven months. Peat says one of her key challenges going forward is to better define what event cinema actually is. But first, we discussed the association’s new website.

Digital Cinema Report: The ECA recently launched a new website. Talk about the decision to do that and what changes you’ve incorporated into the new site.

Grainne Peat: An organization’s website is its key communication tool. Having a platform that we could access and update regularly with current information was vital. The opportunity to rebuild the entire site felt like a sensible approach to solidify the new offerings of the Event Cinema Association.

Much of the information on the site was out of date and feedback suggested that the site was hard to navigate. We’ve introduced a new range of content, including a clear message about who we are and how you can benefit from being part of the ECA. It has been developed to showcase our core values of how we intend to help better promote event cinema.

In terms of design, we wanted something simple but intuitive and consistent. We have added in new features to share box office performance and event cinema content. We are actively asking colleagues to submit information for us to share on the website and help build a content rich site. We want the new site to be an engaging website to share news and performance on event cinema from around the world.

Digital Cinema Report: That’s not the only changes you’ve instituted since becoming ECA’s executive director. Of the others, which ones stand out the most for you?

Grainne Peat: One of the first things we established was a clearer offering of what the association plans to do and offer members. Having a defined strategy and a clear set of objectives to be measured on was vitally important to help galvanize and drive membership. Along with this, came revising the membership fees. Having a lower (and transparent) fee for all, to ensure cost wasn’t a barrier was needed.

Our growing presence at industry events, most notably CineEurope this year, has been a key driver of our evolving success. Event cinema should play a role in these events and discussions, it is a growing area of cinema programming and one that is finding news way to reach new audiences, of all ages. Equally ensuring we have some kind of visibility at all the key events comes with its challenges, but we have a hugely supportive community that are keen to help.

Providing data, resources and content to help better promote event cinema has been another key focus of the ECA. The annual report was a huge step forward in the ability and importance to collate and share data and trends for event cinema.

The ECA’s annual report demonstrates that there are a lot of inconsistencies around how event cinema is segmented and reported. While there is a lot that can be refined for future publications, it was a valuable and welcomed fact-finding mission to pull together box office admissions from more than ten different territories (including the US, Canada, Australia, Russia, France and the Netherlands) and include a range of insight reports from content providers, vendors and cinemas from around the world.

The ECA conference in Amsterdam next month will start to unpick and discuss what data is most important and what can be done to improve how this is recorded and shared. This will lead to a wider discussion around the need for a universal (and agreed) categorization of event cinema to help get better transparency of event cinema performance.

There is no doubt that event cinema has evolved and is mainly defined by content and/or by methodology of release. But even within these categorizations, it is not always clear what is considered to be event cinema content. This is a much a needed discussion that the ECA is best placed to steer and develop.

In the long term it will help us to provide more meaningful and accurate data insights around event cinema performance.

KINEPOLIS’ JAARBEURS, UTRECHT TO FEATURE MX4D AUDITORIUM

Nick Dager

Kinepolis’ Jaarbeurs, Utrecht opened October 10 and features laser projection, RealD 3D and a MediaMation MX4D auditorium. This is the first of several Kinepolis based MX4D locations as part of a recent deal.

“This is the first location we have done with one of the greatest theater circuits in the world, Kinepolis,” said MediaMation CEO Howard Kiedaisch. “We look forward to more in several countries. Their cinemas are stunningly beautiful and on the cutting edge technologically.”

MX4D technology intensifies the movie going experience with full motion chairs, weather simulations and scents, impacting all senses. A patented armrest delivers additional effects to each seat, while the audience enjoys a truly immersive, yet communal theater going experience that is not available from home.

Fall and winter films to be released in the MX4D format include: Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil with Angelina Jolie, Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Other upcoming films in MX4D include Sony’s Jumanji: The Next Level and Charlie’s Angels, and Paramount’s Terminator: Dark Fate.

WHAT CAN ATTENDEES EXPECT FROM DIGITAL CINEMA SUMMIT ISE 2020?

The Digital Cinema Summit, presented by Integrated Systems Europe in conjunction with Digital Cinema Report, highlights how advances in digital cinema technology are transforming not just how movie theatres around the world operate but the kinds of content they can offer to their customers. Top digital cinema technology experts from around the world will discuss those changes and the new developments on the horizon.

Nick Dager is the Editor & Publisher of the online magazine Digital Cinema Report. He was a daily newspaper reporter in suburban Chicago for several years prior to attending New York University’s Graduate School of Film and Television. He started the technology column for Weekly Variety and for two years was a contributing columnist for Box Office magazine. He has reported on film and television production for most of the leading trade publications in the industry. He was Senior Editor at Millimeter magazine, Founding Editor of Post magazine and Editor-in-Chief of AV Video & Multimedia Producer magazine.

Competition at movie theatres around the world these days increasingly seems to be less about the movies exhibitors are showing and more about the seats they offer, the food they serve or the other entertainment options only they can provide. Meanwhile, the Hollywood studios produce fewer movies year after year and streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon spend millions of dollars on a diverse and growing range of movies and other programming. And the very wealthy, those willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a single feature film can see it in their home theatres before they even get to the Cineplex. Which raises the question: are feature films still the most important thing at your local movie theatre?

The Digital Cinema Summit will detail the many changes that are taking place in movie theatres around the world with an emphasis on the changes taking place across Europe. Leading experts and practitioners from all parts of the motion picture distribution chain will provide insights to how these changes are being implemented and how movie theatres are profiting from them. In addition, the conference will offer an excellent venue for networking, face-to-face exchanges and the opportunity to establish new business connections in this ever-developing industry.

DIGITAL CINEMA SUMMIT ISE 2020: THE CHANGING CINEPLEX

THE CHANGING CINEPLEX

Are Movies Still the Focus of the Cineplex?
Moviegoers today can play online games in the lobby or simply lounge there with coffee or a drink in a comfortable chair. Theatres today also feature full restaurants; some have bowling alleys and karaoke bars. Once inside the auditorium they can now enjoy (endure?) seats that more resemble an amusement park than a cinema. What place, if any, do serious feature films have in 21st Century movie theatres?

Streaming and its Impact on Movie Theatres
There was an effort last year to bring at least 30 percent EU-originated content to Netflix and Amazon. What is the status of that effort and how will it affect filmmakers and cinemas in Europe? What are the BBC and CST doing in this regard? A bigger question, how should theatre owners respond? Meanwhile, companies such as Barcelona’s Bel Air Cinema now offer first-run movies to homeowners willing to pay several thousand dollars per title for the privilege. These homes have personal theatres with the latest technology that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. What is the future of that market and how will it impact mainstream cinema?

Cinema Advertising and Event Cinema
Driven by technology, event cinema continues to grow and it’s especially strong and diverse in Europe. Exhibitors are now offering gaming and eSports in cinemas, where the experience is ten times bigger than anything available in the home. What does this mean for theatre owners, for Hollywood and, for consumers?

WHY THE ISE DIGITAL CINEMA SUMMIT MATTERS

Thanks to ongoing advances in digital cinema technology, the exhibition business is being transformed and your local movie theatre is rapidly becoming much more than just a place to see feature films. Today movie theatres are entertainment complexes where patrons are encouraged to linger to enjoy a meal in a nice restaurant, have a drink in a comfortable bar, take part in big screen gaming or eSport or go bowling. You can even watch a movie.

Increasingly, local theatre owners are transforming their business to cater to the needs and wishes of their specific community. This transformation has been driven by digital cinema technology, and the resulting increase in business – business often not directly tied to Hollywood feature films – shows no signs of easing soon.

The possibilities for a movie theatre today are wide open. Exploring and understanding those possibilities and, in particular, providing insights as to how attendees can profit from all this are the focus of the ISE Digital Cinema Summit.
